Stephen Cohen, historian of Soviet Union whose revisionist views influenced Gorbachev, dies at 81

Stephen Cohen, a scholar of Russian history whose ideas influenced the reform-minded Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev as he sought to introduce new democratic norms, and who was later seen as a prominent defender of the policies of Vladimir Putin, died Sept. 18 at his home in New York City. He was 81.
