MORGINS, Switzerland - As empty chairlifts on the French side of the Alps bounced in the wind, Swiss ski resorts braced for their busiest day of the season.

Skiers and snowboarders, lured by the winter's biggest dump of fresh powder, arrived in a continuous stream this past weekend at this Swiss mountain village, one of a dozen resorts that form the cross-border ski region of Portes du Soleil, or Doors of the Sun.
